India has taken an important step in protecting women. The age of consent for a woman to be married is 18. Sex with a child bride was considered to be OK. There was no standard for how young was too young. India has to take into account one problem with the law. A man can marry a girl between the age of 15 to 17 and have sex with them. He does not have to fear the law. A change on this is being debated.
Now India has in effect ended child marriage for those under 15. There are several points that will have to be worked through as the issues come forth. A child bride can go through the steps to bring charges of rape. This has to be done before a year has passed.
The hardest issue will be culture. It was normal for a child to be married and the husband to engage in marital relations with the child. Now the bride has to be 18 for consent. India has taken an important step in women's rights. It has to complete the step and change the law that allows a man to marry a 15 to 17 year old and force her to have sex.
