Rape culture is prevalent in India. This leads to women and girls being attacked and raped. The attacker feels that he has done no wrong since his culture tells him that females don't matter. So what is done to a female is of no consequence. There are men in various levels of the community that feel this way.
A 77 year old guru, Asumal Sirumalane Harpalani aka Asaram Bapu has been sentenced to life in prison for the rape of a 16 year old in 2013 in Jodhpur. This case which has dragged on for a while is finally over. He is also on trial for rape in Western Gujarat. The sad thing is that he preached celibacy. I guess that was for everyone except him and his followers.
Two of his associates were given 20 year prison terms while two were acquitted. He is no stranger to being accused of sex crimes. See the second link. It is a Wikipedia article that lists most of the known complaints.
