In the town of Hafizabad in Pakistan, gang members posed as government officials to convince a father to let his 17 year old daughter take a blood test. He was promised money each month to go toward her dowry.
She came home weak after the blood test.. Her father took her to a hospital. A physical exam showed that she had a spinal tap done. The father registered a complaint at the police department. There may be sexual abuse charges pressed because she had been forced to strip. The police arrested four gang members that are in jail now. The police believe that the spinal fluid was sold to local desi hakeems or homeopaths.
It is sad that in a poor country, gangs prey on families with children. There should be additional 10 years prison time attached to this kind of crime. If Pakistan makes time in prison mandatory for this in addition to time for crimes committed, gangs would think twice before doing this.
